HISTORY
No-one can account for the official history of beersketball, but it probably
originated from the game of Caps. At some point, Beersketball diverged
from Caps to become its own distict game. You can read about Caps here.
The game of "Basketball," as played in the NBA and NCAA college athletics
is actually a variation of this drinking game.
My theory is that Caps was invented when some foreign object was thrown
across a room, such as a key or a coin, and it accidently landed in someone's
drink. Then, in retaliation, it was thrown back towards the original
thrower's drink. And thus the game was born. Many changes over the
years have occurred as the game evolved. Historians suggest that early
games in Colonial Williamsburg had a stein of beer as the target, and wooden
nickels were tossed from 2 or 3 yards away. The loser may have had to drink
the contents of the stein after the game, which would be warm and full
of contaminants. Such unsanitary practices lead to a botulism plague that
eventually made people rethink the rules of the game.
The changes that occurred to complete the divergance of Beersketball
from Caps:
-
More uniform scoring and drinking system
-
More appealing name
-
Increased distance between cups
